Think of how your personal attitude towards handling money, being successful, reading about those with great wealth and power, being entertained by glamorous celebrities, living in a consumer culture, etc.--all the facets of contemporary life in a rich country--consider how your personal attitude coincides and does not coincide with that of your family and friends. Look back over the stories we've read in the past few weeks to find common themes, plots, characters, and/or symbolism. What sort of ideas on money and wealth and power did we toss around in class? Choose ONE of the focuses below:

  1. Address current issues of income inequality in the country. Use literary examples and news items to support your thesis.
  2. Consider how gender plays a role in issues of class and wealth. What roles do men versus women play in the texts we've studied?
  3.  How does class influence how a person might view money and the things that money buys? Consider lower, middle, and upper class attitudes towards financial success and material comforts. Use literary examples and journal articles to support your thesis.
