Think of how your personal attitude towards handling money, being successful, reading about those with great wealth and power, being entertained by glamorous celebrities, living in a consumer culture, etc.--all the facets of contemporary life in a rich country--consider how your personal attitude coincides and does not coincide with that of your family and friends. Look back over the stories we've read in the past few weeks to find common themes, plots, characters, and/or symbolism. What sort of ideas on money and wealth and power did we toss around in class? Choose ONE of the focuses below:
- Address current issues of income inequality in the country. Use literary examples and news items to support your thesis.
- Consider how gender plays a role in issues of class and wealth. What roles do men versus women play in the texts we've studied?
- How does class influence how a person might view money and the things that money buys? Consider lower, middle, and upper class attitudes towards financial success and material comforts. Use literary examples and journal articles to support your thesis.

10 $$$ Questions
- You are offered $1,000,000 for the following act: Before you are ten pistols -- only one of which is loaded. You must pick up one of the pistols, point it at your forehead, and pull the trigger. If you can walk away, you do so a millionaire. Would you accept the risk?
- Would you be given $10,000 for your own use or $100,000 to give anonymously to strangers? What if you could keep $1,000,000 or give away $20,000,000?
- For $20,000 would you go for three months without washing, shaving, brushing your teeth, or using deodorant? Assume you could not explain your reasons to anyone, and that there would be no long-term effect on your career?
- If you were helping to raise money for a charity and someone agreed to make a large contribution if you would preform at the upcoming fund-raising show, would you? If so, what would you preform? Assume the show would have an audience of about 1,000.
- On an airplane you are talking pleasantly to a stranger of average appearance. Unexpectedly, the person offers you $10,000 for one night of sex. Knowing that there is no danger and that payment is certain, would you accept the offer? For $100,000?
- For $1,000 would you be willing to stand up in a crowded restaurant and, for at least a minute, loudly berate a waitress from some trivial imperfection in the service? For $100?
- For $1,000,000 would you be willing to never again see or talk to your best friend?
- You are given $1,000,000 to donate anonymously to charity or to a stranger. How would you dispose of it?
- Would you be willing to eat a bowl of live crickets for $40,000?
- Would $50,000 be enough money to induce you to take a loyal, healthy pet to the vet to be put to sleep?
