What is "literature"? Why do we study it? What do you want to take from this class? [50 words]

  1. Literature has many meanings and is important to different people for all sorts of reasons. Literature tells a story whether it is fictional or nonfictional. As we study literature we can see historical backgrounds and how life and culture affected the residents of the world in a certain time period. I expect great things from this class, nothing in particular to pin down at the moment but I expect it will be a fun class, as fun as school could be.

  2. Literature is all written works of art that can be either published, recognized, or not. It is valuable as a way to remember past cultures and ideologies. We study it as a way to communicate our thoughts and feelings, as well as interpret others ideas, through words. Through this class, I would like to be able to better distinguish myself as a writer and develop my thoughts more eloquently when writing.

  3. Literature is a form of art that is able to express many different pieces of work. Literature is used for our entertainment,conveying information to the public, and many other things including personal self help and instruction. We study literature for a number of reasons. The most important reason I believe we study literature is to learn from great minds. We are able to see the past, imagine a novel, or learn to meditate. I hope to take from this class the ability to make myself read and write more.

  4. Literature is a class made specifically for students to learn about the other side of language arts. It’s the novel, short story, and poem side of the spectrum. It is taught to inform students about the history, and style techniques of other authors. I would like to leave this class with the sense of the basics of literature and to become more illiterate myself.

  5. Literature is the art of creative writing. We study literature to be able to think between the lines and better understand writing, rather than just meaningless words on a page. In this class I want to better develop my ways of interpreting pieces of literature, and further my communication skills.

  6. Literature is the study of any type of writing. We study literature to learn how to write better, and take the skills of other writers to apply to our own to make them better. One of the main things I want to take from this class is better writing skills and a yearning to read more novels.

  7. The meaning of literature to me can vary in several different ways. When I first think of literature I think of poems and deep readings and stories that have meanings behind them. Some of the meanings behind the stories and poems might not be so clear, and literature is where we try to understand and analyze the meanings.

  8. Literature is the study of individual writing styles including novels, short stories, poems, and plays. Literature allows an author to pour his/her thoughts on to a piece of paper. I believe we read literature because for the twenty minutes we spend reading our favorite novel, we get to escape our own lives and explore our imagination. I hope to take from this class a new perspective on reading, writing, and creativity.

  9. Literature is written works of art. It can be non-fiction and/or fiction. We study literature to improve our knowledge on interpretation and meaning behind words. Literature is also studied to improve communication skills, to decipherer the many different styles of writing and to remember the classic beginning works of literature. My hope in is to complete this class with a further understanding of literature and to improve my overall quality of writing on different subject matter.

  10. Literature is the written portion of stories or ones thoughts, there is usually nonfiction and fiction literature that authors tend to write about. Literature is studied to educate one with skills as simple as learning an author’s tone and perspective when writing a novel. When studying literature it enhances ones understanding of different types of writing and style. I would like to improve, my reading as well as my writing and understanding literature as a whole.

  11. Literature is writing and reading. Literature can be written in a variety of ways like novels and poems. If we didn’t have literature we wouldn’t be able to read or write. I want to be able to write a lot better and become confident in my writing. Also, I would like to speak more fluently and thorough so I need to read books that increase my vocabulary.

  13. Literature is writings from different authors, covering different genres over various time periods. We study literature to understand the times and seasons of people’s lives. To explore areas of interest or delve into stories that challenges us intellectually. I hope to become a more competent writer by taking this class that will help me during work.

  14. Literature is the art of writing. Human thoughts, believes, feelings, opinions, views that are expressed in metaphors and that may or may not be realistic. Trough literature we can learn to understand the world in a better way. I’m hoping to learn and to read as much as can in this class; because, I hope to build better communication with my family and coworkers.

  15. Literature is a Latin word that when translated, refers to the art of written works. People generally study literature either because they are mandated by a school degree program or they enjoy it and it allows them to read for comprehension and become competent readers. My intention in taking this class is to aim toward the latter of the two.I want to improve my reading comprehension because in the career world, being able to read a piece of writing and understand it completely is perceived to be a very valuable skill. Also, as I have aged, my love for reading has diminished. I want to learn to love reading again like I did when I was back in elementary school.

  16. My personal meaning of literature would simply be the English language put into visible words. Literature is classified into two categories; nonfiction and fiction, my preference being fiction. I greatly enjoy mentally escaping into a nonexistent place where I can watch intricate stories unfold as they tug on my heart strings. I believe we study literature in order to increase our skills to become literate citizens, and that will help us later in life while working at a job. I hope to increase my writing skills in this class in order to help me earn a higher ACT score and to help me in my future endeavors in college.

  17. I think literature is a style of writing that is expressed in the most artistic way by bringing words to life. I believe we study literature to gain knowledge on our world’s history through poem and story’s. Literature is a difficult style of writing to comprehend, but I hope to acquire a greater appreciation and better study habits through this class.
