Something Special

Reading the poems for homework was not assigned, but choose a poem from the chapters assigned for tonight. Why did you choose that poem? [50 words]

  1. I skimmed through and found “The Ruined Maid.” This title caught my eye and seems pretty interesting maybe something to do with life. Seems like it might have some type of truth behind it in the sense of teaching a life lesson. Or maybe she was a bad maid and the master ruined her name. Either way seems like it would interest me. Titles sometimes can be very misleading though.

The poem Gravity I did not read it but the title caught my eye because there is a song also called Gravity that I like. It has to do with the musical and book Wicked about the wicked witch. Also the Raven I looked at. I’ve never actually read it but I since I knew what it was it caught my eye.

  3. One poem that caught my eye was "Africa" by Maya Angelou. This poem caught my eye because I am familiar with this author. I also plan to visit Africa in my future because I simply love the culture and the spirit of some of the people who live there.

  4. Divorce by Billy Collins. At first I didn’t understand what this short poem meant; which is no surprise because poetry is very confusing, at least to me. After we discussed it in class, the irony of this poem is entertaining. Collins’ use of kitchen utensils to describe love and divorce was quite unique and clever. I don’t think that I will ever think about divorce without thinking about this poem.

  5. I choose We Real Cool by Gwendolyn Brooks on page 897. It just caught my eye because it wasn't that long and was kind of funny in an odd way. It also kept referring to a "We" in it and it was not really clear who that "We" exactly was.

  6. I decided to choose the poem, written by Frank O’ Hara. It caught my eye when I was reading through it, it was explaining the weather and the traffic and how horrible it had been. I chose this poem, because it was showing the same problem that we are having here in Destin.

  7. I chose to read the poem, "Disabled" by Wilfred Owen. I was flipping through the pages andthis was made me stop because of the name. The world disabled alone could mean so many things so I decided to give it a try. The poem is about a man who was very ungrateful when he had everything in the world, but when he was put into a wheelchair he dreds every day.

  8. The poem that captured my attention was "Barbie Doll" by Marge Pierce. This poem express about women towards beauty. It's about a girl that was pretty doll when she was a child but while growing up her classmates saw a big nose and fat legs. The girl was upset so to come to a happy ending she cut off her nose and her legs. While dead in her casket, everybody's comment was: isn't she pretty? It is a scary happy end of a story but it is a women's dream.

  9. The poem "Barbie Doll" by Marge Piercy caught my eye. After reading it though, I wonder what year it was written. I can't imagine that anyone would write such a weird and depressing poem prior to current times. These days, anything goes but in past days, it would be subject to literary criticism and one might not dare to write such a poem. Oh-Just noticed it was written in 1973. So that was about the time that the Women's movement was in full swing. We had burned our bras and began rejecting all things really feminine. So actually it makes sense that it was written in 1973. It was apparently written to make people sit up and pay attention.

  10. I read the poem “Heaven” by Cathy Song. I read this poem because I was interested in how this person thinks heaven is. No one knows exactly how it is. I am curious as to what other people think what heaven is like.

  11. I choose the poem “A Certain Lady” by Dorothy Parker. I chose this poem because I liked how the poet started out the poem drawing sympathy for the young woman being played by this mystery man and in the last couple lines, she completely changes things by saying “And what goes on, my love, while you’re away, You’ll never know.”

  12. I chose the poem "To the Ladies" by Lady Mary Chudleigh. It caught my eye and kept my attention. It was about how a wife and a servant are one in the same. Once your married you are the slave. As time goes on it gets worse and worse. Her freedom has been taken, but she's married so she must serve and obey. Value yourselves, and men despise: You must be proud, if you'll be wise. This poem says ladies beware of marriage, or you may be under the control of a man.
